In 2003, a young painter named Scott Avett walked into artist Tom Schulz’s Empathinc. gallery in Charlotte, NC. The two quickly realized they shared many of the same ideas about art. They both valued the collaborative and spiritual aspects of the creative process; and they both saw their work as open-ended narratives – layered stories that would grow richer as they were shared. In 2011, wishing to continue those early conversations about faith, fine art and storytelling, Schulz and his wife, Rev. Sheila Ennis, envisioned this event as a way to share Avett’s work, as well as the work of Charlotte-based non-profit, The Educational Center.
Original works and commemorative posters ($50) will be available for sale.

Sharing the Creation, Diversifying the Dream
The second annual Charlotte Black Film Festival (CBFF) will take place this March first through third at the Mint Museum Uptown and the UNCC Center City building. Developed by Tommy Nichols, the President and CEO of Glorified Media, the CBFF offers for all attendees film screenings, workshops and receptions showcasing the works of emerging African American actors, composers, screenwriters and directors. Their mission is to showcase “...African American cinema as an art form, and to be a voice for independent filmmakers of color.”

The New Gallery of Modern Art is pleased to announce “stone • earth • paper”, the first exhibit of Patricia Leighton and Del Geist in Charlotte, NC. Both Leighton and Geist have been integrating art into the public realm for more than 25 years. Current UNCC Artists in Residence at Charlotte’s McColl Center for Visual Art, the artists are commissioned by Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) to integrate art into the future UNC Charlotte light rail station and campus site.

As a result, food insecurity levels in our city and the surrounding areas have increased drastically in a very short period of time. The United Way Young Leaders group will hold their annual Week to Fight Hunger on November 7-14 to increase awareness of the needs in our community and to get young professionals engaged in community service focused on serving the hungry.
