ANGELINE’S, MERCHANT & TRADE SET TO OPEN THIS FALL IN UPTOWN CHARLOTTE
Executive chef Robert Hoffman to lead new Italian-influenced modern American restaurant and 19th floor rooftop bar and lounge

Charlotte, NC (August 23, 2017) – This fall, uptown Charlotte’s culinary and nightlife destination scene will reach new heights. Angeline’s, an Italian-influenced modern American restaurant, and Merchant & Trade, a 19th floor rooftop bar and lounge atop Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel, will open this October across from Romare Bearden Park.
Executive chef Robert Hoffman, most recently of SaltRock Southwest Kitchen, a Kimpton restaurant in Sedona, AZ, will take the helm in the kitchen of both Angeline’s and Merchant & Trade, developing two separate but equally innovative culinary menus for the two unique concepts. Prior to SaltRock, Chicago-native Hoffman mastered his craft in top kitchens across the Windy City. He was part of the opening team for Labriola Ristorante & Café and held other chef-level positions at Michelin-starred restaurants.
Food and beverage director Andrew Carlson, another Kimpton alum hailing from Radiator in Washington, DC, will develop and lead the team that will bring Angeline’s and Merchant & Trade to life.
ANGELINE’S:
Of the Third Street-facing restaurant, guests can expect a convivial vibe, unfussy service and trend-forward beverages. Rich textures, patterns and materials will complement natural materials, creating a warm and vibrant setting in the restaurant, as well as on the patio, perfect for al fresco dining, and in an intimate private dining room.
Chef Hoffman leads the development of Angeline’s culinary menu, which offers an innovative take on northern Italian cuisine from a modern point-of-view. The focus will be on rustic dishes made from locally-sourced, seasonal and organic ingredients with an emphasis on sustainability and wood-fired cooking. The dinner menu includes Roasted Branzino with roasted red pepper coulis, Parisian gnocchi, green onion emulsion and salmon roe; a 45-day Dry-Aged Ribeye with potato puree, glazed cipollini, Point Reyes blue cheese and sauce zingara; and a rich Pan Roasted Duck Breast with sweet potato puree, fried brussels sprouts and saba agrodolce. The vibe within the restaurant will be relaxed and welcoming, yet the culinary team will provide an elevated experience, with craft coffee and espresso, daily house-made bread and pasta as well as house-made salumi and fromaggi.
Like the food, the wine and spirits menu also takes its inspiration from Italy. Grappa flights, negroni, house-made limoncello, Italian craft beer and amaro join craft cocktails and artisan American spirits and beer, including local brews, among the curated beverage program.
MERCHANT & TRADE:
There’s another attraction within (or atop, to be exact) Tryon Park Hotel that’s destined to become the city’s preeminent nightlife destination. The 4,500-square-foot rooftop bar and lounge, named Merchant and Trade, offers stunning city views and a retractable roof over its 1,900-square-foot event lawn space for year-round enjoyment. Nineteen stories up, this stylish space will be home to a lively social scene, handcrafted cocktails and curated music. Fire and water features will accent lush greenery to create a sophisticated, yet unpretentious, vibe for al fresco socializing. The sleek and inviting space features furniture and seating focused on stylish comfort, a VIP private terrace and a semi-private events lawn perfect for chic gatherings.
Spirits from North Carolina distilleries, house-made mixers and locally-sourced produce will all be bar mainstays. Offerings celebrate classic cocktails and will include innovative cocktail service and festive, large-format cocktails. Beer will be available in bottles as well as on tap, with the latter solely dedicated to Charlotte-based craft beer.
The Merchant & Trade food menu features modern American cuisine with a global perspective designed for sharing. Dishes including Braised Lamb Belly Steam Bun with house kimchi and mung bean sprouts; Fritto Misto with fried calamari, shrimp, smelt and Calabrian aioli; and Oysters served with a seasonal mignonette will be offered.
Angeline’s and Merchant & Trade are hosting job fairs on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, 400 E Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and at Sugar Creek Brewing Company at 215 Southside Dr., both in Charlotte.
